As The Day Fades - Sant Antoni

My base in Sant Antoni de Calonge, Catalonia faces south-east looking directly out to sea so there isn’t a direct line of sight to the sun as it sets. Instead you get amazing subtly coloured skies as the day fades and night approaches. This photo is an example. It was taken using a Fuji GFX 50R camera and a 45mm - 100mm lens set at the 100mm focal length. Exposure was 0.5 sec and aperture of f16. The Fuji GF system is medium format so the equivalent 35mm settings are a focal length of 80mm and an aperture of f13.

The dark line on the horizon is known as ‘the offing’ which is the stretch of the sea closest to the horizon and still visible from shore. In this case it is a distance of 8.73 nautical miles (or 10 normal miles), calculated using this formula: the square root of the height of the camera above sea level in feet multiplied by 1.17 to give the distance in nautical miles.
